I am an artist and illustrator from Finland. I especially like making art about small and timid creatures. With my work I want to tell all those who feel small that they are wonderful! Our society can sometimes favor the big, strong and confident ones. But the small and timid are just as important and have their own special message to give to the world. When I make art, I feel like I am diving into miniature worlds –worlds, where love, compassion, and joy exist.

17.06. - 17.07. 2016

Olen kunstnik, õppejõud, ja Eestlane. Kuid kasvasin USAs, Eesti keel on ikka mu emakeel.

During the residency at MUHU A.I., I plan to disconnect from daily responsibilities and distractions in order to fully delve into a new body of work and research. I will make a series of drawings, photographs, sound pieces, videos, and animations. My work examines the strategies that we use to contain and control our surroundings. I explore our successes, failures, and perceptions of these systems. Using an interdisciplinary approach, I create hybrid spatial conversations that elaborate on tactics and superstitions, unveiling our attempts at order – or at least our desire to believe. This new body of work that I will make in MUHU will become part of a multidisciplinary installation.

I use line, geometry, pattern, and accessible materials to address issues surrounding restriction, both physical and psychological. I often use specific moments as a referential foundation, yet my work transcends an explicit scene and transitions into a universal experience, either of conquering or succumbing to the fear. A fish out of water (2016)

(MUHU RESIDENCY EXHIBITION PERFORMANCE BY HIROKO TSUCHIMOTO)

“A fish out of water” is an art project by Hiroko Tsuchimoto. She presents a performance, which summarizes
her onemonth residency on Muhu Island in Estonia. Her main interest for this project is traditional Estonian
paganism and situations involving the fishing industry on the island. Referencing a strong connection between nature and Estonian people via pagan tradition, Tsuchimoto looks back into the historical relation of humanity and nature and the structure of dominance. It extends to a subject of the Western tradition of  natureculture dualism and the relationship between gender and the environment. She also includes a context of the decline of the local fishing industry on account of EU policy and brings questions about future discussions of environmental issues.

AUREELIA MITT

ESTONIA

1.08. - 31.08. 2016

I am an artist currently living and studying in Cardiff, UK. I moved to Wales to gain an art degree, valuable life experience and explore my abilities as an artist. I am a painter who works with acrylics and oil paints on mainly two dimensional surfaces. But to be completely honest, I like to paint with anything and everything that possibly makes colour. I also love texture - I love creating it, playing with it and destroying it in order to create more. Being mainly an ’’abstract’’ painter, I never know what might happen on my canvases and boards. My work is a reflection of time and space and everything that happens in it that I am able to catch and preserve through the colours and textures.
